FAQs

Is START UP Models an agency?

No START UP Models is not an agency and START UP Models does not find models work. We help aspiring models take the first few steps to break into the modelling industry and put you in a confident position to start approaching the right agencies with the right information.

Do I need a portfolio?

Yes, a portfolio is one of the keys to your success. It is your CV. Modelling portfolios show ability and versatility, and will show your full potential as a modelto all clients. Your clients may well hire you depending on your modelling portfolio and your actual live presence. Therefore the better your portfolio the higher chance of getting signed with an agency and finding work.

Do I need to pay for my portfolio?

Every model will need to pay for their portfolio. Top fashion agencies will invest and build portfolio’s for their models and will take a large figure from their first pay, however not every model is lucky to sign to a top fashion agency as they have very strict requirements.

Do I need professional images to approach agencies?

You will always need professional images to market yourself as a model, however there are some companies and agencies that will request natural images as well as professional images before making a decision.

Does START UP Models work with studios?

START UP Models is owned by A&S Marketing, and refers clients to appropriate photographic studios. START UP Models takes a fee for this referral.

Do model agencies guarantee work?

No Agency will guarantee work. While they can represent you and market you it is ultimately the creative decision makers who organise the shoots to choose which model they want to work with, and they do that by looking at your portfolio.

How long would it take for me to get jobs?

This again depends on what the clients are looking for. There are many stories where models start picking up jobs from the moment they sign up till 3 months after they sign up. This can also depend on new trends, new fashions, and new companies.

How much will I get paid?

Rates for models really depend from clients to clients. Some rates can be hourly and daily. Once you are signed with an agency you should have a very clear understanding of all rates the percentage your agent will take from your earning, you can refer back to your contract to keep track of your earnings.

Do I have to travel?

Modelling can involve traveling and this does depend on the location of shoots and castings for you to attend. Usually your agent will arrange your travel.

Would modelling affect my studies?

Agencies will represent you and find work; it is up to you to decide which castings and shoots you would like to attend. Do not be afraid to say no. If you are in full time education your agency will be aware and would only call you at the weekends and holidays so your studies are not interrupted.

Can I join more than one agency?

Most models within the industry do not get exclusivity contracts - they work on a freelance basis. This can have its benefits because it means they are able to work with more than one agency

What shape or size do I have to be?

The model industry has undergone an overhaul in the last five years: no longer do you have to be a size zero to be successful. Nowadays, many of the world’s top designers have banned size zero models from appearing in catwalk shows. It is important to be realistic and approach the correct agencies with the right style of portfolio

Is a tattoo acceptable in the modelling industry?

While tattoos were no go in the industry, they are now more accepted, depending on their size and location. With a third of young people in the START UP now having a tattoo, advertisers are realising that their target market not only want to view models with tattoos but have some form of body ink.

Advice For Parents

Here at START UP Models we know that your child’s future is your number one priority. Child modelling can be an exciting and enriching opportunity for your child but knowing the right steps to take can be a daunting task.

As your child will require a parent present at all times, this journey will be one that you embark on together. Your support and supervision is invaluable, and can often determine the success of your child. START UP Models have some useful tips and advice with you, the parent in mind.

We have a strict rule that any under 22 year old models must be accompanied by a parent for any of the services we supply. The purpose for this is primarily the safety of your child, and secondly we feel that below 22, your child will benefit from the support you can provide, and you can help make objective decisions untainted by aspiration.

Below are the positive and negative aspects of your child trying to break into the industry:

The Benefits

  • Modelling can provide a modestly lucrative income for what is usually part time work
  • Many models often use modelling to support themselves through higher education
  • It helps develop the child on many fronts: organisational skills, experience, dealing with commercial issues and decisions, meeting new and varied people, traveling to new places
  • It is great for a child's confidence and their development
  • The AMA estimates that a child model will on average earn between £4,000 and £5,000 per annum.
  • Brings parent and child together in a common goal
  • Engages children and young adults to enter new situations without fear
  • Any child under the age of 16 or in full time education must be licensed to work in modelling or entertainment. Reputable agencies which represent children are aware of and adhere to Child Licensing Laws and will organize this for you.

The Drawbacks

▪ It is very competitive, and rejection is part of the process

▪ It might involve a degree of travel

▪ There are initial hurdles to overcome

▪ There are costs associated with becoming a model, although these are tax deductible

Modelling can be an exciting and enriching opportunity for your child. However, they will need your full support if they are to succeed as a model. As you will probably be their manager, you will need to accompany them to their modelling shoots and also ensure that the jobs they take are appropriate for a child of their age. All models work as part of a team - as your child’s manager, you will become part of that team.
